"The Weapon" vs "Iron Fist"

The 2007, 4-issue martial arts comic book mini- series "The Weapon", written by Fred Van Lente and illustrated by Scott Koblish, is currently in development as a feature film:

"...martial arts enthusiast 'Tommy Zhou' has discovered a means to create solid objects from light, inventing the superhero identity 'The Weapon'.

"Not believing the legends his grandfather told him as a child, Zhou's inventions unsuspectingly make him the target of a millennia-old assassin cult that's convinced he's unlocked the ancient mystical techniques of the 'Order of Wu-Shi' ('The Way of the Weapon')."

Jim Henrie ("The Beautiful & The Damned") will produce.

In other martial arts-related comic book-to-film projects, development continues on Marvel Studios "Iron Fist" , with a screenplay by Rich Wilkes ("XXX").

'Iron Fist' aka 'Danny Rand', a practitioner of martial arts was created by writer Roy Thomas and "Green Lantern" illustrator Gil Kane, debuting in "Marvel Premiere" #15 (May 1974).

Co-creator Thomas said that the origins of Iron Fist owes much to writer/illustrator Bill Everett's 1940's comic book superhero, "Amazing-Man".

"I'd seen my first kung fu movie, even before a Bruce Lee one came out," said Thomas, "and it had a thing called 'the ceremony of the Iron Fist' in it."
"I thought that was a good name, and we already had 'Master of Kung Fu' going, but I thought, 'Maybe a superhero called 'Iron Fist', even though we had 'Iron Man', would be a good idea'. Stan (Lee) liked the name, so I got hold of Gil and he brought in his 'Amazing Man' influences, and we designed the character together..."

"...Plunging his fists into the molten heart of the dragon 'Shou-Lao the Undying' infused the dragon's superhuman energy into 'Rand', This along with training by 'Lei Kung the Thunderer' gave Danny Rand the power of the 'Iron Fist', allowing him to summon and focus his chi (or natural energy) and enhance his natural abilities to extraordinary levels.

"The ultimate expression of this focus is the ability to concentrate his body's natural energies into his hand, manifesting as a supernatural glow around his clenched fist, making his fist 'like unto a thing of iron'. So concentrated, this 'iron fist' can smash into its target with superhuman hardness and impact, while his hand becomes impervious to pain and injury. However, the feat of summoning the power required leaves Rand physically and mentally drained, unable to repeat the act for a time.

"Other applications of the Iron Fist power include the ability to focus chi energy inward to heal oneself or outward to heal others of injury, as well as the ability to telepathically fuse his consciousness temporarily with another person and meld with that person's mind..."

"Dredd": I Am The Law

Sneak Peek more new images of actor Karl Urban ("Star Trek") as superhero cop 'Judge Dredd', in the upcoming DNA Films' comic book adaptation, "Dredd".

The futuristic crime feature co-stars actress Lena Heady ("Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles") as the villain 'Madeline Madrigal' (aka 'Ma-Ma').

The $45 million budgeted, 3D adaptation will be distributed by Lionsgate.

Urban stars as the law enforcement officer from 'Mega-City One', for director Pete Travis ("Vantage Point"), from a screenplay by Alex Garland ("Sunshine").

Reliance BIG Pictures and IM Global, a Reliance international sales company, financed the live-action feature, based on the 2000 AD Publishing character created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra.

"The main thing about 'Dredd' is that it’s a fantastic comic," said "Dredd" producer Andrew Macdonald.

"Our idea was to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of 'Dredd' in 'Megacity', so we had to get the tone right."

"Alex Garland’s script is faithful to the original concept that made 'Judge Dredd' a favourite bad-ass hero," said "Judge Dredd" co-creator Wagner.

"This adaptation of 'Judge Dredd' will have an emphasis on adrenaline and realism, with all the scale and spectacle of 'Mega-City One'."

Inspired by Clint Eastwood's "Dirty Harry", Dredd is a uniformed judge, combining combine powers of police, judge, jury and executioner.

Dredd and his fellow Judges are empowered to arrest, sentence and execute criminals on the spot.

With 'bionic' eyes implanted after a time-traveling mission to the 'City Of The Damned', Dredd carries a 'lawgiver' pistol. His ride is a cannon-mounted, AI intelligence 'lawmaster' chopper.

'Joseph Dredd' and his brother 'Rico' were originally cloned from the DNA of 'Chief Judge Fargo', the first chief judge. Their growth was artificially accelerated and they emerged in 2066 with education and world knowledge electronically implanted in their brains by CPU during gestation.

The name 'Dredd' was chosen by genetic scientist 'Morton Judd' to instill fear in the criminal community.

In 2070, during the 'Atomic Wars', the Dredds saw action for the first time as cadets, temporarily fast-tracked through the 'Academy Of Law', assigned the rank of full judges and sent to restore order, following the US Justice Department deposing the President.

Joseph continued to excel as a Judge, rapidly gaining promotion to the rank of 'Senior Judge', during the 'Fourth World War'.

'Simon Templar' Is RKO's "The Saint"

According to reports, RKO Pictures have hired Travis Wright to write a new screenplay adapting author Leslie Charteris' "The Saint", featuring master thief 'Simon Templar'.

The character has been featured in a long-running series of books by Charteris published between 1928 and 1963.

RKO owns the rights to several films based on "The Saint", including the 1938 feature "The Saint in New York".

"The Saint" has previously been adapted for several motion pictures, radio dramas, comic strips, comic books and three television series.

Templar is known as 'The Saint' because of his initials (ST) and because his heroic exploits fly in the face of an otherwise nefarious reputation.
